In most archaelogical sites in the western world you'd be lucky just to get close to the ropes cordoning off the area. But at Machu Pichu you're free to walk around the entire complex, and touch, walk on, and climb onto anything there. One has to wonder how much longer this can go on before the tourists ruin the place. Peru does collect a fair amount of money in entrance fees to Machu Pichu, but most of it goes back to the central government, not to site maintenance. Back to Index | Prev | Next |
